Var ol!

I stumbled across this Turkish expression while browsing through www.turkishdictionary.net: Var ol! Good for you!/Well done!/Bravo!

That's a keeper.

Actually I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that. For "bravo" we tend to say "bravo," or "afferin (sana)."

Also, you've given me an opportunity for the öğrenci to correct the öğretmen — "afferin" is spelled "aferin". :^)

Hah! Nice try, grasshopper! The original Persian loan-word "aferin" is pronounced, and increasingly spelled, with two f's. Probably because the accent is on the first syllable, which, since there are no long vowels in Turkish, they re-interpret as a double consonant.
